Science Facilities

The Incubator has a variety of laboratory sizes. They range from 450 to 1000 SF and come equiped with biological safety cabinets, fume hoods, DI water supplies, vacuum connections, gas lines, and also have sealed floors for radiation work.

Resident companies have access to more than $1 Million of onsite scientific instrumentation and business equipment including: autoclaves, glassware washer and dryer, incubators, centrifuges, shakers, and - 80° freezers, in addition to refrigerators, a freeze dryer, spectrophotometer, image analyzers, plate readers, and real-time PCR.

The Incubator's scientific support services include hazardous waste pickup, animal care services at subsidized rates, facilities and support for radiation work, type I deionized water in central locations, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and lab oversight through the University’s Environmental Health and Safety unit.

There is no charge for use by Resident companies.

Laboratories

There are 19 wet labs, ranging in size from 450 - 1000 sq. ft. Most have an internal business office.

Small Animal Facility

This 6,000 sq. ft. Specific Pathogen Free Level 2 Small Animal facility is attached to the Sid Martin Incubator.

Large Animal Facility

Nearby is a fully contained large animal research facility with 25,000 sq. ft. of useable space with 40 individual stalls, plus an eight room Biosafety Level 3 area.

Common Equipment Labs

Companies have on-site access to $1Million of common equipment. There is no charge for use by Resident companies. Go HERE for an equipment list.

Fermentors

The fermentation facility has an 80 liter pilot fermentor and a 14 liter seed fermentor. Both are fully instrumented and computer controlled. Downstream equipment includes a continuous centrifuge and a cell homogenizer. A laminar flow hood and large capacity incubating shaker are also included.

Further process development and biopharmaceutical manufacturing is available nearby at Florida Biologix™, the University of Florida's new manufacturing facility for Phase I and II clinical trial material.

Greenhouse

The 600 sq. ft. state-of-the-art greenhouse has heating and air conditioning for climate control, plus a nearby seedling growth chamber and storage rooms for fertilizers and insecticides.

Plant Incubators

Specially designed controlled growth chambers are available for seedlings.

Darkroom

The Incubator has a well equipped darkroom.

Generator

The Incubator has a backup generator with identified plugs in the labs and offices. Many of the critical areas (temperature sensitive facilities) are also protected.
